Noted Serial Killer John Wayne Gacy was executed in 1994. He was a prolific killer in the 1970s who took the lives of 33 people that we know about. Some investigators have felt that John Wayne Gacy may have killed more people but there has not been any way to prove it, till now.
Before his death blood samples were taken from John Wayne Gacy. At the time of the execution we knew about DNA but it was not yet the crime solving tool it is today. When DNA became a crime solving tool many convicted felons had their DNA samples entered into the DNA databases. Few people decided to upload the DNA profiles of already dead felons. So the DNA of John Wayne Gacy was never checked against suspect DNA in cold cases.
Now investigators are going to upload that profile into the DNA Database. Cases that had evidence with DNA can now be checked against the Gacy profile. If Gacy did in fact kill other people, and leave behind some trace of himself those cases can be closed.
